Look for MEDUSA UPLOADED, published by Tor, available in paper, ebook, and audio. MEDUSA IN THE GRAVEYARD is due out from Tor in July 2019.

I've been published under three pen names: as Emily Devenport, I wrote SHADE, LARISSA, SCORPIANNE, EGGHEADS, THE KRONOS CONDITION, and GODHEADS. As Maggy Thomas, I wrote BROKEN TIME, which was nominated for the Philip K. Dick Award. As Lee Hogan I wrote BELARUS and ENEMIES. My books have been published in the U.S., the U.K., Italy, and Israel. I'm writing as Emily Devenport again, and I have two titles available exclusively in ebook: THE NIGHT SHIFTERS and SPIRITS OF GLORY. (Okay -- almost exclusively. TNS is also available in audio.)

I'm an undergraduate studying Geology, a volunteer at the Desert Botani

The theory is that when you go over that list, you're going to realize that the thing that is going to happen next is really on that list. Another writer I know says you should interview your characters, ask them questions about themselves and about what's been going on, even what THEY think might happen.

But for me, the only way through a block is to approach the job as if it were pick-and-shovel work. Just sit down and pound something out. The trick is to keep the page quota low until you feel more confident again. During my worst bouts of writer's block, that page quota has been as low as 1/2 page per day. But even that glacial pace will move a book or story forward, until you feel confident again. Eventually you find you can do more. And you realize that you're working on a ROUGH draft. Stuff that doesn't work can be tweaked during the next round.

Don't automatically saddle yourself with high daily quotas. When your writer buddies are bragging that they got 2000, 4000, 8000 words done in their last session, congratulate them but don't kick yourself. I finished two novels in 18 months by writing on a laptop during my lunch break. And I learned to enjoy writing again. (less)

It's about Oichi (pronounced Oh-EE-chee), a young woman on a generation ship who has been quietly plotting sedition for most of her young life against the class of Executives on board who have been ruling with an iron fist. She suddenly finds herself on the wrong side of an airlock, but is rescued by an AI named Medusa who is part of plot for a revolution that has been brewing since before Oichi was born. They bond and begin to takes steps, one assassination at a time, to change the class structure of Generation Ship Olympia. But in the process, they uncover secrets that call their entire history into question.

That book is finished and in the pipeline. I'm currently working on the sequel, in which Oichi discovers that running things is a heck of a lot more work than bitching about how other people are running them. Book two will eventually take her back to Graveyard, a world that harbors ancient, alien technology. Both the people of Olympia and the Medusa units were engineered by a Weapons clan so their brains and bodies could interface with that ancient technology. The aliens who created it are long dead, but they left behind artifacts so advanced, other races are barely beginning to grasp their implications. Much of their surviving technology resides in a spaceship graveyard dominated by three gigantic ships that are so old, their hulls have fused with surrounding rocks. These giants are called The Three. They are powerful, sentient machines who are much more complex than the Medusa units, and much more dangerous. Humans have been able to communicate with The Three in the past, but only at a great cost, with a devastating loss of lives. Oichi's people could wake The Three without suffering those consequences, and use them to make powerful weapons. Anyone who controlled The Three would be unstoppable.
And now The Three want to have a conversation with Oichi -- to decide if they're going to wake again.
That's my current project. I'm about halfway done with the sequel.

Michael's Chronicles: Be Who You Are

To quote the old Motown song, You can do what you want to do/But be who you are . . .

Take some advice from Michael, who has had A LOT of things go wrong on the road, and has had a lot of people try to get him to compromise, or take the blame when he shouldn't, or help them with unworthy shenanigans.

Be who you are

Use what you have

Do what you can

And be kind

You have nothing to lose

Be grounde
