Research is the backbone of a good spy novel. How do you do yours? Confidential sources like Tom Clancy and Vince Flynn? Open source research? On the ground field trips like Frederick Forsyth and Brad Taylor? Or a mixture of all of the above?

Ross Sidor All of my research is from open sources-- books, articles, travel guides/websites, documentaries, Google Maps/Earth. It's not as time consuming as it might sound. It helps that I pretty extensively read non-fiction on a variety topics for my own personal reading and I retain information well. I also read the news everyday from a variety of sources. For things like weapons, I'll do firsthand research when possible,
