I just finished the first book in your Chalion series. Wonderful read! I noted the Early Modern Spanish and Medieval French political/cultural motifs, but what other periods/nations served as inspiration for your worldbuilding?
Lois McMaster Bujold
Oh, gosh, I wrote that book 18 years ago, so it's all blurred in my memory. But I can say that besides Spain (obviously) I was thinking about a whole raft of not-necessarily-noble-born Renaissance ministers to kings and queens who helped usher in the transition from realms to nation-states: Walsingham, Cisneros, Richelieu, the unfortunate David Riccio, and so on.
The Hallowed Hunt, which you may get to, draws on a lot of material from a slightly earlier period in Germany. Kick-off book was:

and then a pile of other source material including biographies of Charlemange.

While reading "The Lies of Locke Lamora" I came across a section with the upper class in danger. I was instantly reminded of a passage that I loved where the upper class reacted bravely and magnificently to danger. I am 90% sure you wrote it. Are you able to tell me approximately what section, of which of my Vorkosigan books I may find it? Thanks.

Vorkosigan Idea - Miles does real legislation in Vorkosigan District as I always felt that this was never addressed given as there district always seems to fall behind as Aral and Miles were always off world or at the Capital worrying about Barrayar. Thoughts?

Many authors write material that is ultimately cut out of the finished product, either by the author herself or by an editor. Do you have any backlogs of text that did not make it to the published work that you deem readable by your fans? Or that you regret leaving out?
