I'm in the middle of rereading The Warrior's Apprentice now. I was struck when Elena tells Miles that Baz has made up his own story about who Miles is--that he's essentially exiled for being a mutie and his younger brother has ursurped his place. Minus the exile, that's pretty close to Ser Galen's plot. Did you know that already when you wrote The Warrior's Apprentice?

Other than being raised with a strong moral code and sense of noblesse oblige, it seems that despite the Council of Counts and the Ministers, the only real check of the Emperor’s power is the threat of the Emperor becoming disliked enough to send enough popular support over to a relative to win a coup, hence Yuri’s Massacre and Barrayar’s stated bloody history. Or has there been a balancing act of power shifts?

Hi Lois - Flowers of Vashnoi is clearly in conversation with The Mountains of Mourning. Both Stories are heartbreaking, and while the experience Miles had strongly informed his path of maturation from adolescence to adulthood, how does story in Vanoshi affect Ekatarin in the long term?
