Goodreads asked Mike Suarez:

How do you get inspired to write?

Mike Suarez For a period of a couple months, ideas would pop into my mind during down time, whether it was while I was riding the train to work, mowing the lawn, or watching tv at night. I always had my phone handy, and if a new line or verse popped into my head, or if a better way of phrasing an existing line occurred to me, i would type it into a Notes app immediately, before the idea had a chance to pass me by. During this period of time, I had the story practically memorized, and would recite it in my head, over and over, focusing on how it flowed. My inspiration was thinking about the first time I would read it to my son, and wanting it to be as perfect as possible and roll off the tongue as cleanly as possible for him.
