Goodreads asked Kali White:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Kali White My most recent book, The Monsters We Make (Crooked Lane Books, June 2020), was first inspired by the real life missing paperboy cases of Johnny Gosch and Eugene Martin in Des Moines in the early 1980s. Like all Gen X Iowa kids, I grew up in the frightening shadow of those cases and never forgot them. I'd wanted to write about them in some way for years, but just hadn't found the angle or through story until the 2007 child abduction cases in Missouri of Ben Ownby and Shawn Hornbeck that I became interested in the idea of one crime inadvertently exposing another. With that idea in mind, a plot started to form around the story of the Des Moines cases.
