Goodreads asked Ted Mallory:

How do you get inspired to write?

Ted Mallory Someone once said "what garlic is to salad, insanity is to art." I write for my mental health. John Greene talks about "going on stupid walks for my stupid mental health." I probably should go for a walk or exercise or drink water or hug people, Hell, I'm an artist- you'd think I'd draw or paint, but I break down and write. I know no one is reading, but I'm just so sideways and strung out, all I can think to do is write. Maybe I'm too afraid to drink or try drugs. Writing doesn't cure me, but it certainly eases the frustration some. So in short, I get sad, I get anxious, or I get pissed off. Why? How to other people get inspired to write?
