Goodreads asked Richard Lear:

How do you get inspired to write?

Richard Lear An idea always comes to mind. I'm usually washing dishes or taking a shower and an idea or inspiration hits me. For years I'd wanted to write a novel but couldn't think of anything I know enough about. I'd always wondered how novelists chose how to open the story.. I admired the ones whose opening line of the first chapter was in the middle of an action. I decided to emulate that. Then a line popped into my head: "He was going to shoot that dog." I then had to find out who "he" was and why he was going to shoot a dog. That was the genesis of "Three Rode The Trail".
