Richard Lear Apparently my father was all set to marry another woman a few years before he met and married my mother. My folks never discussed this and in fact told lies about how they met. I only found out about this through a self-published memoir written by my favorite aunt. I think the exploration of what the real story was with my dad would make a great novel.
Richard Lear I always wanted to ride in the cattle drive that forms the basis for the plot in LONESOME DOVE, or to ride through the green grasslands alone. In my fictional world I would feel the isolation yet wonder at riding alone through the miles and miles of the Northern Plains. In other fantasies I'm riding and camping in the high country of the Rockies or the Tetons.
Richard Lear An idea always comes to mind. I'm usually washing dishes or taking a shower and an idea or inspiration hits me. For years I'd wanted to write a novel but couldn't think of anything I know enough about. I'd always wondered how novelists chose how to open the story.. I admired the ones whose opening line of the first chapter was in the middle of an action. I decided to emulate that. Then a line popped into my head: "He was going to shoot that dog." I then had to find out who "he" was and why he was going to shoot a dog. That was the genesis of "Three Rode The Trail".

Then, I just sit down, start with where I left off in a previous writing session and just pound it out. I always have instrumental music playing on my laptop, mostly movie and classical music. It acts as a calming, grounding background which helps me relax so that my creativity can flow. I find that after about an hour of writing the block as been lifted.

I also will write down notes for character names, dialogue and actions. The best times are when I get in the zone where creativity flows easily to me when I'm in a 2-4 hour writing session. It's akin to a runner's high that kicks in somewhere during a run when you feel you're flying and could run for hours. That's the high I get from writing novels.
Richard Lear Bloodcurdling howling.
Richard Lear I'm working on two things. First, the sequel to my current book that should be released in a year or two.

I completed and published "The Sheriff Of Stovepipe", the short story based on how Yulin Temple. It recounts in greater detail the day that Yulin Temple first rode into Stovepipe and how he was appointed sheriff after his gunfight with Jake Blanchett.
