This is going to sound crazy, but dialogue inspires me. Some writers start with a situation, others start with an overarching plot. I start with dialogue. I hear characters and I wonder about them. Who they are, where they came from, what they want. And from that single bit of dialogue, I flesh them out and figure out what story they're telling.
