Goodreads asked Janet Newton:

What mystery in your own life could be a plot for a book?

Janet Newton In 1896, my great-grandfather was murdered as he walked to work, shot by a neighbor and buried alive. When I was thinking of a plot for my fifth Llangynog mystery, I remembered his story and tossed it around in my head until I came up with a modern plot where a farmer walking home from his fields at dinnertime was murdered in a similar fashion. My grandmother's memories of that time (she was five when it happened) gave me details that I incorporated into the aftermath of the murder.
