How did you come across the idea for the Princesses of Westfalin series?

Jessica Day George Many eons ago as I was finishing SUN AND MOON, ICE AND SNOW I thought up the idea of doing a version of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, mostly because I find the different versions of that story confusing and also because I wanted to have a guy who could knit. (Historically, soldiers did knit their own socks! Also if they were wounded they knitted in hospital for therapy.) I just set out to do the one, then of course I wanted to tell Poppy's story, then I wanted to finish off any loose threads...

I know many kids (12 and 13 year olds sent similar ones) but I am doing a fantasy writing unit for school and would like some advice on how to make and keep track of my characters. This is my question mark cuz it says I need one? I have a few ideas but wanted some real advice from a real author and you write one of my fave book series (Castle Glower series) so thank you.
