Goodreads asked Jesse Sublett:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Jesse Sublett The best thing about being a writer is usually, having written. When you know it's done and it's published. It's a relief. The best feeling is when you are writing, in the zone, and the scenes and words are flowing and it feels right, it's musical. But it's really a great feeling to get feedback from people who value your work, who feel better knowing that you have written a book and that it was written for them. I've had some of my best experiences writing nonfiction and then meeting people who are intensely interested in the subject matter and/or have a personal connection with it. They come to get their books signed by you and they have this shiny expression on their faces and it just feels great.
