'Etchings' came from an art project that my wife told me about. In high school, her art class would go to local cemeteries and do etchings or 'rubbings'. This is where you put a piece of thin paper over a gravestone and rub charcoal over the paper to bring out the writing, etc.
Then they would go back and talk about the people and what the rubbings could tell them.
