I have two pieces of advice. The first sounds simple but is often the one that gets skipped. Write. Write constantly. Write every day if you can. Do research and outlines but always make time to write as well.
The second is to always have something with you to take notes. It could be a small notebook and pen or a smartphone or tablet with note features. Some of your best ideas will come when you are nowhere near your computer. Jot down a note so you will remember it later.
