Goodreads asked C. McNair Wilson:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

C. McNair Wilson At virtually every speaking engagement, usually as I'm signing books, I hear (f-f-f-frequently) "I wanna write a book, too!" Then I say, "Great. What have you written so far: magazine articles, pieces for you company newsletter, a blog ... are you keeping a journal ..." And most say, well, no. I wanna write a book." My response, "If you are writing nothing now, you'll probably NEVER write a book." WRITE, right now. You can start a blog and not tell an yone it exists just as a writing exercise. ALSO: carry a journal/sketchbook everywhere. as it says in the fron of all my 150+ sketchbooks: "Anything worth remembering is worth writing down."
