One word: Sacrifice. If you're serious about it you're gonna have to give up something to be great. I gave up video games for 9 months (and even still now) to write Beyond the After WHILE I was teaching. Now I'm giving up watching football on the weekends to do book signings and get momentum going on my books.
BUT it's all for hopefully one day I have the freedom to write and do what I want when I want.
Also, don't be afraid to just go one direction and GO! You can always change it later if you don't like it or think of something better. Unless you've already printed it out and sold 1000 books...then you're kind a screwed ;-P
