Ed Ireland
Ed Ireland asked Nancy Deswik MacCreery:

Jordan Lake is a beautiful spot, and perfect for thinking up plots. How extensive is your research when writing?

Nancy Deswik MacCreery Glad you agree, Ed! The lake is a good spot for thinking about anything. :)
As for how much I research, it depends on the subject. I sometimes "fall into" research -- for instance, for "The Essence" I read several books about Ataturk, the inspiration for the General's character, and it held up writing for months. I felt a bit paranoid about doing online searches for uranium mining in 2002, but I wanted to be accurate, even if it was just a detail. I'll also look up restaurants and interesting facts about locations, like the slide on the Great Wall of China. I'd rather visit the locations in person, but youtube is the next best thing to being there! Thanks for your interest.
