“We think that the things we are going to regret are the things that we didn't attain; but that's not what we're going to regret. We're going to regret the things we didn't give, the love we didn't show, the time we didn't spend on someone who mattered... what we didn't GIVE. That's what we're going to regret!”

“You? How did you mess it up?”
“Oh, he took me to a party at his friend’s house and I started flirting with his friend for some reason, maybe to make him jealous; I don’t remember. So, Lloyd took me home and asked for his ring back. He said he couldn’t trust me. Oh, I was brokenhearted over him.
After I married Rich, Lloyd looked me up and we went for a walk. By then, he had a child and so did I. Oh, how I’ve regretted losing him. I hope he had a good life.”

“Do Not Let Regret Control Our Thoughts
What is done cannot be undone. When we have done something wrong, an appropriate solution and a sincere expression of regret are needed to cleanse our thoughts again. Do we really want a mistake to continue haunting us and remain forever in our thoughts, so that we can never be free from what we did wrong in life? Everyone makes mistakes in life. Some people do so knowingly, but when we make a mistake with innocent intentions, we do not need to continue suffering from it for the rest of our lives. Our life moves forward. The past has passed and will certainly influence our future, but it will not return, and the same event will never be repeated in exactly the same way. We can learn from it and improve ourselves when we have the understanding to acknowledge that we did something wrong and thereby harmed or hurt another person. An acknowledged mistake does not have to keep haunting our minds. We can express our inner regret and sincerely ask for forgiveness. Asking for forgiveness cleanses our thoughts. When our sincere expression of regret is not accepted, we cannot force the other person to accept it. Then we must realize that we have shown our good intention and that distance is sometimes the only sensible solution to keep our own minds peaceful. If we continue to carry guilt and regret in our thoughts, it will keep resurfacing in our minds and will never give us inner peace. Our strength in life lies precisely in acknowledging our mistake, asking for forgiveness and cleansing our thoughts of what we did wrong. When our honest intention to express what lies on our soul is not accepted, we should not continue harming ourselves by allowing the same reflection to linger endlessly in our thought world. Do not keep it forever in our minds. Remove it by learning from it, seeking peace and moving forward, because otherwise it becomes only wasted thinking that causes sadness and heartache. Regret what we have done when we look at ourselves in the mirror and know that we acted wrongly, because we realize that we could have done it in a better and more peaceful way. But never forget that life goes on, the clock keeps ticking and we ourselves must set change in motion.

“Words of regret gain value through our actions
We all make mistakes. Anyone who claims to perform everything perfectly at all times is someone we should not simply believe, but may reasonably assume is boasting. If even programmed machines can make errors while carrying out operations, then it is only natural that human beings, who are not programmed and must deal with emotions and incomplete knowledge, can also make mistakes. In itself, making a mistake is not something terrible, because it is human. When we harm only ourselves through it, we carry the personal blame and responsibility for the consequences. It takes on a different meaning, however, when we knowingly or unknowingly harm others through our mistakes. Then we may cause difficulties for which we ourselves are responsible and whose consequences another person must bear. People of character will take this deeply to heart. Only a few will react heartlessly and without concern, but never say never. The circumstances in which a mistake is made and the intention behind it are of great importance to the feelings of the person responsible. For the person harmed by that mistake, however, those circumstances and intentions do not change the consequences, because the harmed person is certainly not happy about them. It is precisely the compassion shown by the person responsible that can reveal to a large extent whether genuine regret is present. The words ‘sorry’ or ‘my apologies’ alone are often not convincing enough. It is therefore not easy to reach the right conclusion immediately, because words alone are not always powerful enough. Genuine emotional involvement, on the other hand, speaks volumes. When the person who made the mistake is truly shocked by what happened, that person’s behavior and inner feelings will show it under all circumstances. Sincere regret causes an emotional reaction that becomes visible not only in words, but above all in the willingness to do everything possible to resolve the problem that has arisen. This sincere emotional involvement makes visible how the person responsible feels about what happened. Through that involvement and the actions that follow, the person who made the mistake can make clear that there was no intention to harm, but a serious mistake whose consequences are understood and for which responsibility is being taken. By paying attention in daily life, we will be able to see from the actions after a mistake whether the person responsible is truly and convincingly showing sincere regret. Only then can words of regret gain sufficient meaning and value for those who were harmed by that mistake.
