One Summer
question
Born in 1927

Question for those who have read "One Summer"… My dad was born in 1927, and I'd like to give him this book. But I haven't read it yet, and I usually "screen" books before giving them to him. He doesn't like anything provocative or racy, or too complicated. Just the facts. Do you think this is appropriate for an 86-yr-old? Thanks for your input!

I've read it and yes, I am sure that your 86 yr old dad would enjoy it. In fact I plan to send it to my 85 year old father-in-law.
I really enjoyed this book. Not racy at all and provides a lot of good information in an engaging manner. I especially like the aviation portions of the book.

It does pull back the sheets on some very unpleasant sides to America in that period - you might want to read the chapters on racism and prohibition.
A totally different America to today.
I found it fascinating.

I agree, not racy at all. I would have no problem giving this book to a kid... or an 86 year old father. ;)
I liked the book. Definitely a large collection of facts that Bryson is able to link together with some rather odd and coincidental connections. But I found by the end I was just waiting for it to be done.

There are some descriptions about Babe Ruth and his extra activities that may raise an eyebrow - on the hotel room floor being worked on by a lady......
I would send it to my 91 year old mother in law. I did not find any of the descriptions racy. Bryson has a good skill at bringing together disparate events into a coherent whole.
This was a great book - has a little bit of everything for everyone & doesn't do more than give a taste of the action going on that summer! Also gives you a brief run up to all the events so very easy to put in the context of the times. Should be on all reading lists for high school!

It is not racy. There is one "F" bomb. It's a great, fun, easy read.

My mother was born in 1927 and I wish she could read it. I thought it one of the best books I've read in the past 4 or 5 years, perhaps ever.
