Well, I'm not the target audience apart from being a Norse myth geek so.... I've read a bunch of books similar to this where a Chosen Girl or Boy finds out they are the child of a God or somehow else a Valkyrie or Hero. What's entertaining to me is in the delivery, and how creatively they can spin the myths. I borrowed this audiobook and am listening to it while I do the dishes and drive the car, so eh why not.

Unfortunately this book is BORING AS F*** so far. The hero is an insipid pleasant inoffensive B student everygirl type who has NOTHING special or interesting or brave or clever or imaginative about her except her oh so SPESHUL parentage. 40% of the way through and she's still moaning and fainting and denying and attempting weak snark. But of course she meets the hunky bad-boy "Fen" who is disarmed by her Bambi-like naivety. Barf. I'm so cynical. Mythologically-speaking I haven't found anything interesting yet except that the fire demons are incredibly bad at killing you. The Norns are boring caricatures of female archetypes. The descriptions of situations and settings lack urgency or vividness.

Look, a completely different target audience is gonna love this book; me not so much. If you despised this book stay tuned in case I start to really enjoy the rest of it and eat my misanthropic words.

Well... it's slightly improved. The heroine actually did something active instead of gaping and running - it's awesome that this is because of baton twirling in band practice. Also, the prose got slightly more descriptive and interesting. However, I keep guessing at the end of phrases before they finish - boring boring. Also, sick of the "special princess victim" trope that is so old-fashioned, because Phoebe so far hasn't done much except be passively special and passively victim-y, so I hope she starts being able to make some more choices to influence the plot soon. I left her tonight tied to a sacrificial altar while a demon goes MUAHAHAHA over her... okay. I suppose the fact that the Norns seem to be major players in this plot, and there's a major setting in Muspelheim are something that are fairly unusual in Norse myth-themed books too, so there's that. ...more "
