“Lacan is led to establish a difference between being and the Real. The Real is not a being, or a substance, but its deadlock, the point of its impossibility. It is inseparable from being, yet it is not being. One could say that for psychoanalysis, there is no being independent of language (or discourse)—which is why it often seems compatible with contemporary forms of nominalism.
