It is often said that poets and artists have to create their audiences. Perhaps founders of therapeutic schools have to create both patients and disciples.
“Sometimes, we use ‘busyness’ as a distraction from making a big decision about our lives. We cover up our feelings with our work, with our diary, with other people’s needs. In my coaching sessions, I find most people are putting off something out of fear. Why would they bother writing a book, or training for a marathon, or launching a business if there’s a chance they might fail? They fill their time with less important, endless tasks, rather than focusing on the goals that matter. Having a goal we care about is scary. So how do we get around this block?”

“Even if you achieve things that seem outwardly fabulous, an unhealed emotional injury will make you experience them as empty and unappealing. By contrast, recovering your emotional health will suffuse even small successes with joy, long before you achieve anything obviously spectacular.”

“When we lack self-understanding, we are more likely to choose a partner or relationship as a response to our wounds, insecurities, or modeled behavior.”

“Success’ now is in the minutiae of the way I spend my days. It’s committing to doing things that help myself and others. It’s showing up. It’s taking care of myself. It’s paying the bills without losing my mind. Or having a long walk. Or calling a friend. Or having a new adventure. Or meeting my deadline. Or being brave. Or saying no. Or having a lie down. I don’t need someone from Strictly Come Dancing to do my make-up to make me feel valid. I just need to be me. When we unpick the myths, we open ourselves up to a new-found sense of freedom and get to design our lives from scratch.”

“A woman who has felt rejected by her mother because of adoption, illness, depression, or escape into alcohol will feel deeply unmothered and will continue to look for what she never had. She may function forever as a “daughter” looking for approval, love, attention, and acceptance from a mother who is incapable of giving these. If she experienced her mother as either absent or too busy to mother her, she may set out in search of a positive female role model, perhaps an older woman with whom she can bond.”
