Quicksand
by
Shorthaired Gym Friggan, who looked like a freshly polished wooden deck: indistinct gender, a whistle around the neck, and broad, shiny, clean-shaven calves, always surrounded by the odor of gym socks and someone else’s sweat.
“Cantor approved of a system which had allowed him to get rich, but he also believed in pulling the ladder up afterwards. If everyone succeeded, nobody did. Anything else was basically communism”

“A rite of passage almost, to miss all the important holidays, to be on weekend call and never there for your family or friends... Because how else could you be providing great service to strangers if you didn't take that time away from people who were not.”

“Your mother should have treated him better, he was her patron, after all. Just like the parasite that is humanity should treat this planet better.”

“I grew up with a strong desire for invisibility. In large part, this was due to the ever-present feeling that I was failing at performing my gender. The whole boy thing was just so exhausting, and I never felt like I got it quite right. I was always on the verge of being exposed as unmanly, and I had no idea how to avoid it. Failing at boy-ness was an unforgivable sin, so my only hope was to not be noticed. Each new encounter with another human being could be the one where I slip up and have my cover blown, and be punished, possibly with violence. [footnote: It was generally agreed that, even if you didn't approve of violence, effeminate boys were "just asking to get beat up," and bore at least some of the responsiblity when it happened.”
