Soooo. I loved this book and I honestly can’t get enough of this world and these characters.
I have to say, the plot gets more complex with each new book - but not in the bad way. It’s so much more, and so much fun, to follow these investigations.
This time, we come back to the Pit, a swampy, magically morphed place we first visited in Burn For Me to find Bug. But the Pit has changed for the worse, and a Prime was murdered - and Catalina, as Deputy Warden of Texas, has to find the murderer. The suspects are four Primes, an animator, an aquakinetic, a pyrokinetic and a summoner.
Of course we meet Alessandro again, this time actively helping Catalina to solve this case. Sparks fly, because they both can’t stay away from each other, and I loved it.

I do have to say that I liked the beginning of each Nevada book a little bit more, but just because we always immediately had a personal view on the events the Baylors have to investigate. With Catalina, we get a more official view in the matter, which is also interesting but not quite as emotional.

Catalina. Oh, boy, did she grew in this book. She actively chose her role as Deputy Warden, committed to it, and sees every case through to the end. She takes the role as Head of House Baylor, mercilessly, and protects her family at all costs.
Yes, she was scared. And she didn’t always knew what to do with House politics. But she learned, and she fought with every fiber for her family and I loved that.

Alessandro was way more prominent in this book and I liked him way more than in the last one.
There happened something in the few months between Sapphire Flames, and it changed him. He was way more open, he was more real, and he made an effort to decide, again and again, to be open with Catalina. It was visible through his every action, and I loved to see it.

So, and then, to Catalina and Alessandro. I liked them. I really, really did. Because what I didn’t like about them in the first book - the missing connection, the too-fast-love - was now here. They talked to each other, and they supported each other. Whether if it was Catalina with her magic and the responsibilities as Head of the House, or Alessandro and his missing feeling of self-worth. They talked, and they solved problems together.
And, hell, they were a badass couple. I absolutely, freaking loved the fight at the end in the Pit, with Alessandro unleashing his incredible magic and Catalina fighting against the Abyss.

We also have way more Baylor family dynamics in this book, and did I love to see it. Nevada and Connor are finally back from Spain, and the problems and misunderstandings that were obvious were finally talked over. Connor was a whole and complete part of this family, and it warmed my heart to see it.
It was just - such a heartwarming, adorable and badass family. With everyone.

And - I am excited for the final installment of Catalina’s series and for absolutely more of this fascinating series. Let’s go! ...more "
