I cannot for the life of me understand the protagonists's reaction to this. If you believe hell is real, one should do ANYTHING to avoid it. The complaint that God has not warned us does not hold water. The parable of the rich man and Lazarus explains eternal torment. I take from this that McCormack only wants the kind of savior that will smile and pat one on the head. It's sad that modern writers have eschewed real spiritual discernment.

“In a good bookroom you feel in some mysterious way that you are absorbing the wisdom contained in all the books through your skin, without even opening them.”

“What is hell? I maintain that it is the suffering of being unable to love.”

“For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror
which we are barely able to endure, and it amazes us so,
because it serenely disdains to destroy us.
Every angel is terrible.”
