fellow linguistic students discussing forgotten languages. The group called itself the Inklings, and its members would remain friends throughout their lives.
Lewis taught literature and religion. Other Inklings included professors of literature, writers, poets, physicians, etc. Think the author here is confusing Oxford circle with discussions Tolkien encouraged and led when he was teaching at Leeds.
