Bears have not lived here for more than a thousand years,
Yet even three year olds grow wide-eyed with awe and fear at the mention of bears. They have never seen one and their parents and grandparents, many of whom are from all over the world, have probably not seen bears either. Despite much research, only two British bear stories were found in time for publication.
“Our task as humans is to widen our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”

“We rarely stop to consider that the animal who kills with the least reason to do so is the human animal. We think of lions and wolves as savage because they kill; but they must kill, or starve. Humans kill other animals for sport, to satisfy their curiosity, to beautify their bodies, and to please their palates. Human beings also kill members of their own species for greed or power. Moreover, human beings are not content with mere killing. Throughout history they have shown a tendency to torment and torture both their fellow human beings and their fellow animals before putting them to death. No other animal shows much interest in doing this.”

“We won’t find another planet and move to it: the chances of this happening are nil. We have been given one earth and we are not managing it properly. We don’t deserve another.”

“President Trump’s Fourth of July celebration on the mall was the first in almost seventy years. He recounted great moments in our history: the Revolutionary War, the fight by the suffragettes to get the vote, and the work of the civil rights movement. Donald Trump doesn’t just believe America is great; he believes America is the most exceptional nation in history.
It was vintage Donald Trump, the man who came from the outside, selected by the forgotten men and women of America, reminding us that American success is a choice worth celebrating, that American innovation is worth encouraging, and that America’s military is always worth honoring.”

“Each gene is a word; each organism a book. Each plant species that dies out contains words that have been written only in that book. If a plant species becomes extinct, one book is lost, and with it the words and messages it carried. We are burning the library of Alexandria every time we destroy a hectare of pristine habitat.”
