I'm going with a 4.75 star rating for this novel. I truly enjoyed the experience of reading this. This is definitely a dark read filled with blood, gore and a violent 13 year old boy. This is NOT for the faint of heart. If you can't handle a violent story with a child as the main character or a protagonist that is down right morally bad -- don't read this because you won't enjoy it.

I however LOVED it lol. The story itself is a revenge plot with a mix of necromancy and political drama. The world in this story feels so real while still being a fantasy place. I'm interested in learning more about the Broken Empire as the series goes on.

Jorg Ancrath is the main protagonist of this trilogy. We start off with him as a 13 year old boy leading a band of criminals he calls his brothers. At the age of 9 he watches a brutal murder done by his uncle Count Renar. His father, King Olidan, does not act on revenge so he learns the art of revenge and sets off from home one year later.

As much as I hated Jorg, I still loved him! He's not meant to be a likable character. From the first page you get to see how ruthless and heartless he is. He stops at nothing to obtain his goal. He states in the first chapter that he will be king by 15 and emperor by 20. Boy, does he deliver! As much as we are made to dislike him, I felt a soft spot for him as the story went on. What he witnessed scarred him and made him unwilling to love and care. However, as the story progressed you could see that he still had a bit of humanity and heart when certain things came about. I love his hardness and can't wait to see how he grows in the next book.

Makin is the best secondary character ever to me. He's badass when need be, but tries to remain sensible. Seeing him there for Jorg from start to finish was amazing. I can't wait to see what happens next for him. Nuban was freaking awesome!!! I hated what happened to him when they were dealing with Chella, but he handled it like a man! I adore him through and through. The brothers and the Forest Watch are all hilarious! I enjoy Gog's little self. He's just as crazy and destructive.

Sageous and Corion are some twisted men. Necromancers that use the kings and princes as a game of chess! I'm interested to see how things play out for Sageous in the sequel! I'm ready for his downfall.

Overall, though this was a recklessly, dark and twisted story, but I still enjoyed it! I'm ready for King of Thorns. ...more "
