“To understand how salt transforms a recipe of bread, you must watch it work in context. Likewise, each ingredient of emotion must be studied in the context of the rest of the brain that influences it.”

“According to statistics from the City of Bogotá, of the 4 million women in Bogotá, around 1.3 million perform care work, spending hours transporting themselves and their loved ones across the city, leaving little time for much else. This is having detrimental knock-on effects on the female population, 20% of whom have diagnosed illnesses and 33% of whom are deprived of free time for self-care. In addition, 70% do not get to pursue secondary school education and 90% are on a low income.3 Women in Bogotá are trapped in time poverty, with little hope of finding a way out on their own, hurting not just them but their families and the city as a whole. A report published by UN Women and DANE (Colombia’s national statistical authority) in 2020 found that if it were paid, unpaid care activities would represent 20% of the country’s gross domestic product.4”

“How do you pay your twenty-five-year-old son back for not being there for him from the time he was twelve? It can’t be done. I started the paragraph saying it’s an irony, but actually it’s a tragedy. It’s tragic because people spend much of their lives waiting for debts to be paid that cannot be paid. The opportunity to make things right is long gone, but the anger remains. And in many cases it intensifies … and spreads.”

“Creating and sharing is in the lifeblood of our species, and it is through this dynamic where we construct our reality and coexist within it. To create is to express what you’ve discovered about yourself and the world. And through this process, you’ll harvest meaning from the experiences that have deep roots in your mind.”

“And just as a heart attack has the potential to destroy your body, so spiritual heart disease has the potential to destroy you and squeeze the life out of your most valuable relationships.”
