The phrasing annoyed Sage. As long as she was pretty and in a good mood, her husband would love her? People needed love most when they weren’t at their best.
The author was really trying here -- but this is a show don't tell situation. Having the character make an offhand comment doesn't undo the fact the plot and the character's actions don't back up this sentiment.
