I loved Kit as a protagonist - he's delightfully snarky, but genuinely a good person at heart without being in any way an 'innocent' - and we get to see this repeatedly throughout the book. That's not a blend we often get to see, and especially not in a male protagonist.

I love getting to see him learn more about what his powers actually are and how he can use them over the course of the book (but especially in the second half)

And I particularly enjoyed seeing the consequences of the events in last third or so of Three Mages and a Margarita playing out for someone who was on the other side of that fight.

Plus, reading with my analytical feminist glasses on, it's really interesting to me to see a book where the protagonist and main antagonist are both male, but ALL of the important supporting characters who move the story forward in any way are female. I can't right now think of a single other book with a male protagonist I've read where that was the case.

That's not necessarily an automatic plus for a book, and wouldn't be enough on its own to make me like any given story, but it is unusual enough (at least in my experience) to be worth commenting on.

I'm trying to remember whether there was anything that stood out in the book that I didn't love. But honestly, the only thing that jumps out at me is that the first part of it felt VERY much like the beginning of M N Jolley's 'Accused' (Book 1 of the KC Warlock Weekly set) - especially given that the opening scene of both has our somewhat snarky male protag being interrogated by two magical cops.

Granted, Levi and Kit are two very different characters and the worlds of the Guild Codex and KC Warlock Weekly are also not that similar... for something like the first quarter of Warping Minds, I had to keep reminding myself which world I was in, and which worldbuilding details / previous plot details applied.

For what it's worth, I don't know if that would have been an issue if I hadn't read the two within a few months of each other. It's possible that if I'd left more time between them, I wouldn't have had the same problem.

Aside from that, though, I can't think of any other complaints or niggles I had - it was just a really fun story, and I'm looking forward to getting to Book 2 whenever it turns up in Ms Marie's recommended reading order. ...more "
