“He’s blackmailing me.”
Kevin jumped to his feet so fast, she sat back in her chair. “He’s a dead man. I’m going to kick his ass so bad he won’t even be able to cry for his mommy. Gonna fold him up like a napkin.”
His loyalty warmed her heart, even as embarrassment warmed her cheeks. “It’s…not what you’re thinking.”
“I’m thinking by the time I’m done pounding on his face, even dogs will be afraid of him.”

They were both quiet a moment, exchanging one of those old-married-people looks he still couldn’t decipher, but which made him squirm. He and Beth were both adults, but that didn’t make telling his parents he’d accidentally gotten a woman pregnant any easier.
“Lot easier to walk with your fly zipped,” Leo grumbled.”

“Hell no, but I had pictured this conversation going somewhat differently. You’d get all offended I didn’t think you could do your job and then you’d get all pissed off and accuse me of trying to be the boss of you and then…”
“And then?”
“And then I had kinda pictured us having make-up sex. And then christening-the-new-office-chair sex. And maybe christening-the-old-office-desk sex because, as far as I know, it was never christened. And—”
