Wow. Hanna did more in less than 300 pages than I've seen authors do in 1,000 and yet nothing felt rushed? I actually felt like some parts during the traveling felt slow! There were 40 pages left and at this point in most books you'd expect to just have some tying up of loose ends but we were still in the climax action part of the story and I had zero fears of the book ending in a cliff hanger.

Honestly, up until about the last 50 or so pages this book was feeling like a 4 star. I thought I'd figured out most of what was going to happen at the end or that nothing really too exciting was going to happen. But that last 50 pages really took it home. There was two major plot twists involving a couple of different characters and by the end we saw character growth like I've never seen before from Kissen. We've all seen characters like Kissen, how she starts out at the beginning of the book. She's a cookie cut out of every girl who's lost everything and has nothing but bitterness and rage inside of her. But the character growth by the end? Unmatched. IN 300 PAGES!!! also, I cried.

This has a strong found family vibe (though I hope we get more of Kissen's original found family in book 2, they were great!) with our main characters. I love that. Also a lot of disability rep that is so well done. Kissen has a prosthetic leg and it is never forgotten. It's not just mentioned at the beginning of the story and then forgotten. It is a constant presence in the story. Also one of her adopted sisters is deaf and it is also written on the page so well. I never really understood how you could write a deaf character and make it make sense to the reader but there have been a few authors I've seen do it really well and Hannah is one of them. It does have a strong traveling vibe though, so if you're not into that, it may hinder your enjoyment.

I am so glad I waited to read this book (I got the illumicrate edition when it came out) because the sequel releases this month and I don't have to wait to see where the story is going next because I can see it going so many places. ...more "
