"Dear god, this book has become such an albatross around my neck, and I feel like I've been trying to get through it for years. This is definitely a ME problem and no criticism of the book itself as the writing is better than fine and I do find the subject fascinating. I'll make some headway and build up a momentum and then hit a slow chapter and take a break with something else, only to forget about it." Feb 01, 2026 08:16PM

“There are no more barriers to cross. All I have in common with the uncontrollable and the insane, the vicious and the evil, all the mayhem I have caused and my utter indifference toward it I have now surpassed. My pain is constant and sharp and I do not hope for a better world for anyone, in fact I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape, but even after admitting this there is no catharsis, my punishment continues to elude me and I gain no deeper knowledge of myself; no new knowledge can be extracted from my telling. This confession has meant nothing. ”
Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho

“At Columbus Circle, a juggler wearing a trench cloak and top hat, who is usually at this location afternoons and who calls himself Stretch Man, performs in front of a small, uninterested crowd; though I smell prey, and he seems worthy of my wrath, I move on in search of a less dorky target. Though if he’d been a mime, odds are he’d already be dead.”
Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho

John Sandford
“So she made no secret about being gay?"
"Why should she?" the little old lady asked. "Nobody would care but a bunch of stuffy old men.”
John Sandford, Rough Country
