"Setting this very frustrating book aside at 37%. I'm pretty certain my disappointment is not a mood thing, and while some reviews echo my exact concerns I'll come back to it later for a fresh look. Ironically, the best line in the book is a stellar alternative to the cliched smile that never meets the eyes. I guess every book has to have *one* good line hidden in it." Feb 02, 2025 03:40PM

Bruce Springsteen
“When it rains, the moisture in the humid air blankets our town with the smell of damp coffee grounds wafting in from the Nescafé factory at the town’s eastern edge. I don’t like coffee but I like that smell. It’s comforting; it unites the town in a common sensory experience; it’s good industry, like the roaring rug mill that fills our ears, brings work and signals our town’s vitality. There is a place here—you can hear it, smell it—where people make lives, suffer pain, enjoy small pleasures, play baseball, die, make love, have kids, drink themselves drunk on spring nights and do their best to hold off the demons that seek to destroy us, our homes, our families, our town.”
Bruce Springsteen, Born to Run

Lois McMaster Bujold
“Some prices are just too high, no matter how much you may want the prize. The one thing you can't trade for your heart's desire is your heart.”
Lois McMaster Bujold, Memory

Felicia Day
“Quite frankly, every single day that I do something creative, and show it to people, I'm nervous. Even this video, I'm like, 'You're too earnest, it's not funny enough, nobody likes you.' Um, well, I gotta do it, because unless I say something about the world I don't know if it's worth gettin' up in the morning.
...Was that depressing, or inspirational?”
