Update: I've changed many of my opinions about the book that annoyed me before but I still love this. I'm trying to reread the series so hopefully my opinion about the second one changes.

For example hitting that scene again where Jamie belts Claire for what she did I kind of have to agree with Jamie. I guess I've matured over these 2 years but I see why Claire was so wrong and why it was such a big deal about what she did. So it's a cool experience to go back into this series and to still be growing with it. Here's hoping I feel the same about the second book >.<

Loved it. Yup. I didn't expect to love it but I did. I really fell for this book. After reading so many reviews that didn't like the plot or characters or were thrown off by the odd romance I really expected to struggle with this one. But I honestly really enjoyed it.
I loved the characters and the development of the plot. I loved that it was kind of written like a journal where things just kind of happened and maybe they connected overall but you were having fun with the meandering wander anyway! I enjoyed the romance and how the emphasis wasn't necessarily on gratuity but on the affection aspect. I loved so much of this story. The dialogue was wonderful and the narrator really added a dimension to the book with her wonderful accents of Scottish brogue. (view spoiler)

Now, there's a reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. There were aspects of the book that I found wildly frustrating and baffling. For example, around the middle of the book, Claire just get's SUPER whiny and useless. Like when Jamie goes to participate in his meeting and she's like "why can't I goooo?". What? Why are you all of a sudden connected at the hip? You're having great sex but dude since when were you so needy and helpless? Like I loved how tough and bossy Claire was and I could get behind that, but she would have these random moments of helplessness that just baffled me and made me want to scream! She killed a man, then becomes super upset about being left alone for a couple hours. There were just times where things didn't feel coherent.

The semi-abusive relationship was weird too. Like when Jamie would get mad and shake her, and then when he hit her with the belt because he lost his temper? That's abuse... No matter how it's dressed up. And it kind of feels like it's given a pass because he apologizes later and "it was how he was raised!". That just left a sour taste in my mouth. I didn't mind the aggressiveness of him but it seemed to get out of hand and allowed for some abuse to slip in without really reconciling it.

Also, I sometimes really struggled with Claire's lack of personality. It would get really old really quickly at times. Like we never really got a glimpse into her feelings during the story and sometimes she was killing someone and you didn't know if that bothered her or not. I'm glad we didn't wallow in her emotions but there are times where she seems to be taking things WAY too well.

Another thing with Jamie, he took everything unnecessarily well... Like he was just overly nice at times that didn't require it. He was just too... understanding. It felt unrealistic and was kind of boring. That, more than anything, made this book feel like wish fulfillment than anything else. THAT is saying something! It just made him a boring character. Oh, she stumbled upon you trying to escape? that's cool. Someone trying to take advantage of you, oh well! It's just too weird that he was SO even tempered for the warrior he is.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book. I started the next one but I can already tell you I'm getting a tad annoyed at how it's starting. Let's see if the series can keep me interested! ...more "
