If you are an expert in physics, you will likely not pick up this book, but you should. Carlo Rovelli does a tremendous job of explaining difficult subject matter so that the rest of us – non-physic experts – can understand. There is a great lesson there.
If you are a non-expert in physics, this book can help guide you to a better understanding of us and the world. Both that is around us and even within us. An understanding that may not be complete, but is deep and meaningful none-the-less.
As physicist Niels Bohr wrote after his rival Albert Einstein’s death: “…To the very last, the desire to challenge oneself and understand more. And to the very last: doubt” Too often, we think we know, so we stop looking for the trails and the evidence that might lead us to a better understanding. That is not only wrong, it can be dangerous.
“To the very last, the desire to challenge oneself and understand more. And to the very last: doubt”
You see the world, and the cosmos within which it exists is complicated. We invent stories to explain things – that is great. But we should not stop following the clues that can lead us to a better and more complete understanding – even if it diverges from our perceived truths. As Rovelli states it, “The confusion between these two diverse human activities – inventing stories and following traces in order to find somethings – is the origin of the incomprehension that distrust of science shown by a significant part of our contemporary culture.”
That distrust of science in our current culture is a serious problem. From vaccines to climate change, the doubts that science wisely exhibits is viewed as weakness. Skeptics sew seeds to provoke divisions and feed that confusion. Skeptics do not want to accept that our reality is based on interactions. Without that interaction are we even really here? We are living in a “world of happenings, not of things.”
We as of yet do not understand our world to understand that our current understanding contradicts itself. That does not mean that it is not there. It does not mean that we are wrong. It does mean that we don’t understand it fully enough to explain the contradictions between a “world that is curved space where everything is continuous; (or one that) is a flat space where quanta of energy leap.”
And while we think that we can “reconstruct the history of our world back to an initial period when it was tiny in size. But what about before that?” Some believe in a Prime Mover, but is that where science should stop being science? I think not.
“What’s non-apparent is much vaster than what’s apparent.”
We, as humans, and as societies, must “not only learn, but we also learn to gradually change our conceptual framework and to adapt to what we learn.” Our future depends on it.

"Seven Brief Lessons on Physics: Thoughts

Perhaps you too know very little about physics. Then again, we may be in the majority. This little book by Carlo Rovelli will not make you a master of physics. It will help you understand a little of the how and whys of the world and beyond....

“Many ex-Muslims do have lifelong Muslim friends and family who are supportive, moderate, or liberal, even if they disagree. This was a common theme in the #ExMuslimBecause tweets: most participants, while certainly unreserved in their criticism of the faith, made it a point to differentiate between criticizing Islam (an idea) and demonizing Muslims (a people). Human beings have rights and are entitled to respect. Ideas, books, and beliefs don’t, and aren’t.”

“There are four things that lead to wisdom. You ready for them?'
She nodded, wondering when the police work would begin.
"They are four sentences we learn to say, and mean." Gamache held up his hand as a fist and raised a finger with each point. "I don't know. I need help. I'm sorry. I was wrong'.”
