I’m rereading this and Harrow because Nona is coming out in ten days! This was just as amazing and silly and cerebral and heartbreaking as it was the first time around, and I feel like I understand things more this time. However, I know there’s still stuff I’m missing, and that this book, which is billed under the ridiculous premise of “lesbian necromancers in space” is actually brilliant and honestly way too smart for me. But I love it.

April 24, 2021:

This review is an amalgamation of my own thoughts and what was discussed at our book club meeting today (April 24).

Holy bone gunge, what a book! Here’s how I imagine this pitch meeting went down (and bear in mind that I have no idea how pitch meetings work at all):

Tamsyn Muir: Lesbian necromancers in space.
Publisher person: You can’t just —
Muir: LESBIAN. NECROMANCERS. IN. SPACE.

And then we were gifted with this ridiculous but way-deeper-than-it-should-be, engaging, heartbreaking, hilarious novel whose narrative voice can best be described as, “millennial who spends too much time on the internet.” There are some who question this voice and who don’t find this book funny, and to them I’d like to gently suggest that they look for the humor in the descriptions and Gideon’s internal monologue, because that’s where it is. This is a book that knows exactly what it is, has embraced itself, and is therefore incredibly good if you’re the right audience.

Aside from the lesbians and the necromancy and the fact that this takes place in outer space somewhere, there is also so much more here. There’s romance, a mystery, a puzzle (separate from the mystery), legit twists and turns that feel organic to the story and not gimmicky at all, an exploration of codependency and queer relationships, some coming-of-age stuff, main characters who are awesome and also scary and also sensitive, realistic teenagers, sixteen or so completely separate and recognizable and somehow thoroughly explored characters, action that doesn’t dissolve into boring fight scenes (usually the bane of my existence), and a satisfying ending that still leaves the story open for sequels. There are still questions and theories by the end, and I am confident that they will be explored in the subsequent books.
