I went through a long period before reading this book of finding myself on my phone way too much, watching tv a lot and not reading almost at all. I decided I wanted to get back to reading the way I used to and as I've read a couple of Sanderson's books from the Steelheart series previously and liked his writing style well enough, I thought I'd give the Mistborn series a try.

Mistborn was by far better writing somehow despite being the same author. I hadn't gotten into any epic fantasies in a long time and this one I'm excited to continue.

I love the character of Vin. As the story begins, she is a scared follower keeping her head down, yet she's very watchful and observant of goings-on around her. She tells herself that she can't trust anyone, as her brother Reen literally beat into her all of her life along with other lessons to survive their existence as members of thieving crews. She's still extremely perceptive and not lacking in intelligence despite her station in life.

As the story moves forward, Vin struggles to understand a different life that includes trust, friendship and all of the pitfalls of life her brother pounded into her head that she could never trust.

But as she learns from each member of her new crew, Vin realizes that the world is not black and white. There are other ways of living. The more she experiences those other ways, the more perplexed and confused she becomes about what she was raised to believe, but also intrigued as she follows the lead of crewleader Kelsier on an insane mission.

Her knowledge of surviving as a street urchin is still buried inside of her as she learns about how to use the powers she had seemingly always had but knew very little about as well as a multitude of 'new' powers she had no idea that she had, all referred to as the powers of allomancy.

Allomancy refers to the use of various types of metals that those with the ability can use to achieve different powers by swallowing then *burning* those metals in their system. Each metal is paired with a second that acts as its opposite, allowing two sides of each ability to work, often called Pushing and Pulling.

Those who can only work one pair of metals are known as Mistings. Those who could burn all of the metals and learn all of the abilities, are called Mistborn. That is what Kelsier is. That is what he helped Vin to realize she is, as well.

The more Vin learns of her allomantic abilities, the more practice she does, the more confident she becomes, and begins to open up more. While she learned from each Misting member of the crew one on one, Vin enjoyed most following Kelsier as he taught her how to use each power.

Sometimes that meant flying in the mists after him as they work with their crew to understand and hopefully end the life of the evil soul known only as The Lord Ruler.

Soon, Vin finds herself stuck trying to figure out exactly who she is, as she navigates her Allomancy training and who she is among the crew, the frightened urchin girl she used to be or the fake persona of Noblewoman Valette, distant niece of the Lord of House Renoux.

As Vin and the crew face unimaginable horrors as they put each part of their plan into action, with failures and successes making each step forward more dangerous, Vin finds herself becoming more at ease among the crew. However foolhardy this plan of Kelsier's to overthrow the Final Empire and end the Lord Ruler's rein, Vin was in. She was cared about amongst this crew and not solely by Kelsier as the crew leader.
