"I can’t resist educational books about books.
“Good books are over your head; they would not be good for you if they were not. And books that are over your head weary you unless you can reach up to them and pull yourself up to their level. It is not the stretching that tires you but the frustration of stretching unsuccessfully because you lack the skill to stretch effectively” (48)." — Mar 02, 2026 06:52AM

"There was a ton more info packed in the introductory sections than in the Edith Grossman translation so it took longer to get through that before even getting to the prologue and first actual chapter of the story. But I appreciate the context! Also cool to note—this Penguin edition kept the text language as close as possible to the old Spanish that Cervantes would've used when writing the 1st edition of Don Quijote." — Feb 16, 2026 10:58AM

“Charms strike the sight, but merit wins the soul.”

“I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound or stab us. If the book we're reading doesn't wake us up with a blow to the head, what are we reading for? So that it will make us happy, as you write? Good Lord, we would be happy precisely if we had no books, and the kind of books that make us happy are the kind we could write ourselves if we had to. But we need books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us. That is my belief.”

“We are all alone, born alone, die alone, and—in spite of True Romance magazines—we shall all someday look back on our lives and see that, in spite of our company, we were alone the whole way. I do not say lonely—at least, not all the time—but essentially, and finally, alone. This is what makes your self-respect so important, and I don't see how you can respect yourself if you must look in the hearts and minds of others for your happiness.”

“Memory is like patches of sunlight in an overcast valley, shifting with the movement of the clouds. Now and then the light will fall on a particular point in time, illuminating it for a moment before the wind seals up the gap, and the world is in shadows again.”
