“Evert nods, studying my red wings as he raises his hand and traces a finger along the feathers at the top. The sensation instantly shoots a shiver down them and my feathers ruffle up involuntarily. I slap his hand away. “Stop that.”
He looks at me, amused. “Touchy, touchy.”
Before he can catch on to what I’m about to do, I bend down and grab hold of his tail, petting it gently. He flinches back in surprise and his tail flicks out of my grasp.
I tsk. “Touchy, touchy,” I say with a smirk.
He narrows his eyes and takes a step forward, forcing me to tilt my head up to look at him.
“Touching a genfin’s tail isn’t a good idea, Scratch,” he says, his voice dropping to a near whisper.”

Finally, Nick took Tyler’s chin in his hand and tipped his face up. Nick’s expression was a little pinched. “Are you looking for the word ‘boyfriend,’ maybe?”

Tyler swallowed.

“Do you want to be my boyfriend, Tyler?” Nick said, studying him.

Tyler licked his dry lips, his face uncomfortably warm.

Nick suddenly grinned, looking more relaxed and carefree than Tyler had seen him in months. “You totally do, don’t you? Look at that blush!”

“Shawn, are you hurt?”
With a gasp, he shoved Rutledge away and focused his gaze on Emily. “What? No!”
A furrow appeared between her small brows. “I thought you were hurt. You were making noises.”
His face warm, Shawn determinedly avoiding looking at Rutledge. “I wasn’t making noises.”
“You were!” Bee said, looking puzzled. “Lying is bad! You said so!”
Emily nodded. “And why did Mr. Rutledge put his tongue in your mouth?”
“Because your brother wanted something to suck on,” Rutledge commented, starting the engine.”

"Yeah. It's adorable." I say, watching it flit back and forth behind him. "Can I pet it?"
He makes a weird chocking sound.

"What? Is petting your tail like a no-go? I haven't read the genfin rulebook. Is it off-limits? Too bad. It looks so soft. Maybe when I get out of here, I'll find some other genfin who will let me pet his tail. Or I bet Evert will let me pet his.”
