“…a bit of queer old-world country life on which they would soon shed the light of reason” (205).
No wonder I love this book with all its old-world country life.

I loved this chapter about the Holy Week and Easter traditions in this German Catholic town near France. 😍

“There’s no such thing as books that ought to be read. Every person has to make his own selection. First of all, he has to find out the books he wants to live with, and then every few years he must reread those he likes best or that mean the most to him…The really great books are always new and different [each time to read them]. They grow with you…” (123).

“Adolf’s favorite period was the medieval age of chivalry. He often dreamed of…riding from castle to castle with his harp and his sword, singing songs and telling ancient tales…How lucky people were to have lived then! Now everything was so awfully modern that it was enough to drive any boy with a spark of adventure to despair…” (28).

“On New Year’s Eve itself, Mother filled big dishes with what was left of the Christmas baking—cinnamon stars and almond cakes, honey cake, shortbread, gingernuts, and hazelnut macaroons” (20).

is finished
Truth to tell I finished this ages ago, but I'm so neglectful about posting reviews!
I've always loved Margot Benary-Isbert's books since I was a child. My first was Blue Mystery and I was intrigued so much by it I still remember it... And I read it when I was about nine, I think. Unfortunately most of her books are out of print or very difficult to find. I like this book but not as much as most of hers.
