Really impressed. Keller's writing is diaphanous enough that even though his actual subject matter is dryly material (finances, social issues) the total effect is nevertheless airy; every transaction, notarization, and dusty committee meeting is aglitter in a perpetual evening light.

Reading this because of (1) W.G. Sebald's terrific essay — panegyric, really — on Keller, with special focus on his political and cultural prescience, and (2) as part of an attempt to rectify my lifelong, baseless neglect of realist fiction.

Kellers letzter Roman. Die Werke eines der bekanntesten Schweizer Schriftsteller sind nicht immer eingängig und dann und wann behäbig, ich sehe der Beschreibung nach aber ein besonderes Buch. Es geht um Gesellschaftskritik an der Schweiz etwa zur Mitte des 19. Jh. also einige Jahre nach dem politischen Neustart der Republik.
