Status Updates From Gente Pobre

This time I'm re-visiting Dostoevsky at the beginning with his very first novel. The characters are like a trainwreck, you know it will end badly but you just can't look away. An incredible exploration of poverty, and a complex example of obsessive love. I'm still not sure what kind of love we're talking about in this book. Romantic? Platonic? Familial? Maybe I'll be more sure by the end.

feeling quite hollow reading this. there’s something so sad about the lives they’re both living and how little freedom either has. i understand why makar doesn’t want varvara to work as a governess, but i find it selfish that he discourages her mainly because he wants her close. at the same time, i understand why she’d feel guilty living off someone else’s money. it's a sad, but also complicated dynamic.
