For owners who are upset at their dog’s loss of “manhood” there are Neuticles - a silicone implant testicle to bring back a pet’s self esteem. A side effect of this business has been men buying implants for themselves and having “enlargement surgeries” done by plastic surgeons.

This is an interesting science book but Mary’s witty footnotes get so tedious. I keep thinking, “You made me stop what I was reading—AGAIN—because you thought you were very funny.” It’s less irritating when she provides important context and makes a joke while doing so, but when she does it JUST to make a joke, or goes on much longer than necessary so that she can make a joke, it’s obnoxious.

Mary Roach’s writing style is one of my favorites - I love a popular science writer who includes their side thoughts in parentheses in the text.

Bloomington and the Kinsey Institute got discussed a lot during the first chapter. Definitely understand the controversy surrounding that building’s history now!
