The period between Kant and Hegel possesses an astonishing philosophical richness. Yet in Hegel's opinion, there are only two thinkers in this entire period who are worthy of the name philosopher: Fichte and Schelling.

At most, Kant thinks of human being as historical being, but he is unable to integrate his concept of a historical person with his ahistorical concept of knowledge. Hegel is the first thinker to integrate the historical and systematic aspects within a single philosophical vision.
[With the exceptions of Marx and Weber] Hegel remains perhaps the first and the last to know how to integrate history into his thought.
