I'm almost annoyed with myself that I'm starting to get into this.

Finally getting to this. Much as I can't stand present-tense narratives, I'm going to try to put my bias aside and give this a fair chance.
-Writing style feels too conversational; would work better spoken
-A couple puns give the impression the author thought of them as they were writing and tossed them in as interjections
-Little exposition, other than black needle monsters and super powers
-Great imagery

There are parts of this book that I really like, but there are also parts of this book that make me roll my eyes.

I think it it interesting that she is giving her main character the ability to react to some circumstances the way a real person would act. You would think that would happen all the time in literature, but it's not always the case in YA fantasy and it is refreshing.
