According to Jim Salicrup, then editor of the X-men book, this special issue of the Phoenix saga is not a What If. It was an alternate ending without killing off Jean Grey. Like in a DVD special bonus features. She gets lobotomized however, depowering her. Issues 136 and 137 were appended with this alternate ending.
The 2nd part of this issue is the transcript of the creative team's conversation about the saga.
