According to Jim Salicrup, then editor of the X-men book, this special issue of the Phoenix saga is not a What If. It was an alternate ending without killing off Jean Grey. Like in a DVD special bonus features. She gets lobotomized however, depowering her. Issues 136 and 137 were appended with this alternate ending.
